Drawing on the fragmented chaos of contemporary information – press articles, online chats, subtitles, advertising messages, political statements, celebrity quotes – Nora Turato streams everyday life back into her work. Here she examines the ways women’s voices are silenced, stereotyped or dismissed within the media and online culture. Turato employs her own voice in an expansive and elastic register in her video works and live performances, foregrounding how women’s speech is often characterised as excessive, abrasive or shrill. The cadence and intensity of her vocal performances recall theatrical modes of address and evoke emotional states historically associated with notions of female hysteria.
Nora Turato was born in Zagreb and lives and works in Amsterdam. In spring 2025, she presented her first solo exhibition in the UK and performed pool7 at the ICA London. The pool7 cycle concluded with a site-specific work at the Meštrović Pavilion in Zagreb in winter 2025. Her performance Cue the Sun, commissioned by Performa, premiered during the Performa Biennial 2023 in New York. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (UK); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (Austria); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (the Netherlands); Museum of Modern Art, New York (US); Secession, Vienna (Austria); Centre Pompidou, Paris (France); MGLC: International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana (Slovenia); Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf (Germany); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (Portugal); Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Liechtenstein); and Beursschouwburg, Brussels (Belgium).
