Created using a process that can take several months, Pam Evelyn’s paintings are composed of layers of applied paint intended – at least at first – to reveal all marks from the first to the final. The artist sees her works as inherently figurative but with their own distinct logic whereby bodily associations and emotional states emerge from the painterly field. Though her work is closely associated with the Abstract Impressionist movement of the 1950s, Evelyn also pulls inspiration from music and diverse art-historical periods. Focal length exemplifies Evelyn’s manipulation of non-representational forms, which operate closely with bodily and topographical forms.
