Tehran-based sculptor and painter Rana Dehghan playfully mixes materials to explore ideas of objecthood, fantasy and the self. Interested in ghosts and spirits as manifestations of trauma, Dehghan has created ghostly figures from fibreglass, using the familiar imagery of a floating white sheet and cartoonish eyes. The work explores the tension between revealing and concealing: although the ghost appears to be hidden beneath its ‘blanket’, its form is also made visible through it. Dehghan connects this idea to her own experience growing up in Iran, a place where she describes needing to disappear ‘under a blanket’ to express herself.

Rana Dehghan received a BA in painting from Azad University, Tehran, in 2013. Working across painting, sculpture, video and animation, Dehghan looks to make the intangible tangible. She investigates the real and the imagined, depicting objects outside of their intended purpose. Dehghan has held four solo shows and has participated in group exhibitions including Asia Art Week in Dubai (UAE), and in Tehran (Iran) at Opening, Abi Gallery, Punishment, Delgosha Gallery, Eat My Fear, Chew My Name, Delgosha Gallery, and Temptation of Green Gloves, Dastan Gallery.
