Melbourne-artist Richard Lewer’s series of large-scale paintings displayed in the NGV’s medieval galleries delve into the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve, capturing the contemporary significance of the tale’s themes of desire, shame, and original sin, without imposing moral judgments.

Exclusively during EXTRA, the artist hosts Richard Lewer’s Confessions. For four nights only, the gallery becomes a space for introspection and self-expression, where visitors can find solace, share their truths, and reflect on the world we live in today.

Visitors are invited to share their confessions with the artist, who will then paint these live at NGV before they are displayed on the gallery walls.

Reflecting on the experience, Lewer speaks with NGV Curator Amita Kirpalani in an Artist Talk on Saturday 27 January, 6.30pm. More information on the talk can be found here.

Based in Melbourne, Richard Lewer exhibits regularly in Australia and New Zealand. He is known for his video and animation, paintings, and delicately beautiful drawings, which evocatively rework some of life’s less pleasant elements – crime scenes, illness, horror movies and extreme events. He has been a finalist and recipient in several distinguished art prizes and residences. His works are held in private and public collections in Australia and New Zealand.
