PROJECT

Kohl Tyler’s vessels explore ephemerality, interconnectedness and the natural archive – understood as nature’s own record of time and transformation – through the lens of design. Esse I–V are envisioned as artefacts from the future, remnants of the planet that draw on deep geological time, fossilisation and the ephemerality of existence. Created using slab-building, carving, coiling and hand-building methods, each vessel is high-fired, inviting shifts in form, welcoming movement, dynamism, and the ferocity of heat and earthly elemental forces.

The acquisition of this artist’s work is supported by the Victorian Foundation for Living Australian Artists

ABOUT

In her art and design practice, Kohl Tyler contemplates notions of ephemerality and interconnectedness. Drawing inspiration from both physical and phenomenal elements, she creates work that speculates on future material ecologies. Primarily known for her large-scale ceramic vessels, Tyler harnesses elemental forces – earth and fire – to create works of nature. In addition to her ceramic practice, she also works in watercolour painting and social practice. Tyler completed a BFA at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in 2016 and was a finalist in the NGV’s Rigg Design Prize in 2025. Her work is held in the collection of the Gippsland Art Gallery and in private collections throughout Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the US.
