Frame

Louis Buvelot's Summer afternoon, Templestowe and Winter morning near Heidelberg (p.300.4-1), were reframed in 2002 as a matching pair. This resolution of the framing came with the discovery of a photograph from 1866 which showed both paintings on display in matching frames.

Summer afternoon, Templestowe had been reframed in the late 1920s with a Louis XIV style composition frame made by John Thallon Co.  The label provides the date of the frame.

In 1994 a reproduction frame based on the Whitehead frame from Eugene von Guerard's Spring in the valley of the Mitta Mitta was made for the painting (see image above).

The resolution of the actual form and detail of the current frame from the 1866 photograph took some time with research across a number of collections, existing frames and pictorial sources.
