Collection of the sitter, Admiral Robert Deans (1740–1815), East Lothian, Scotland, until 1815; by descent to his son, Rear Admiral Robert Deans (1792–1867), 1815–67; then to his widow, Cheltenham, England, from 1867 until her death; thence by descent to the sitter's grand-daughter, Mrs Blanche Morris, until 1911; with Shepherd Gallery (dealer), London (with companion portrait of sitter's wife); from where purchased, on the advice of Frank Gibson and Charles Ricketts, for the Felton Bequest, 1911.
