About this work
At the age of 19, Ambrose Hallen left Australia to study and work in France. There he became familiar with artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse and the expatriate Australian John Russell. Returning almost thirty years later, he had developed a radically modern outlook and exercised an influence on artists such as Lina Bryans with whom he was acquainted before his death in 1943.
