Italian photographer G. B. Poletto was an important figure associated with Italian cinema. He worked as a photographer for the prestigious Titanus film company for almost twenty years until the studio closed in 1964. During this time, he worked with leading Italian movie directors including Federico Fellini and Roberto Rossellini.
While working on pre-production for the 1959 film On the Beach, Poletto produced a series of photographs of actress Ava Gardner. Set in 1964, On the Beach tells the dystopian story of the end of the world after the outbreak of nuclear war, told through the experiences of the last survivors, who are living in the southern outpost of Melbourne, Australia. The costumes, designed by Italian couturiers the Fontana sisters, were commissioned in 1957 with a brief to create a sense of what women in Melbourne would be wearing in the future. With hindsight, it is fascinating to consider the sisters’ speculative views on what might constitute street wear in the near future, and if the images – both moving and still – were enticing enough to attract customers to the Fontana sisters.
Il fotografo italiano G. B. Poletto è stato una figura di primo piano nel panorama cinematografico nazionale. Per quasi vent’anni ha lavorato per la prestigiosa casa di produzione Titanus, fino alla chiusura degli studi nel 1964. In quel periodo ha collaborato con alcuni dei più importanti registi italiani, tra cui Federico Fellini e Roberto Rossellini.
Durante la preproduzione del film del 1959 On the Beach, Poletto realizzò una serie di fotografie dell’attrice Ava Gardner. Ambientato nel 1964, il film racconta una storia distopica sulla fine del mondo in seguito allo scoppio di una guerra nucleare, narrata attraverso le esperienze degli ultimi sopravvissuti, rifugiatisi nell’estremo avamposto meridionale di Melbourne, in Australia. I costumi, creati dalle stiliste italiane sorelle Fontana, furono commissionati nel 1957 con l’intento di immaginare come si sarebbero vestite in futuro le donne di Melbourne. A posteriori, è affascinante riflettere sulla loro interpretazione di quello che sarebbe potuto diventare l’abbigliamento quotidiano di lì a pochi anni e chiedersi se quelle immagini, tanto cinematografiche quanto fotografiche, fossero sufficientemente accattivanti da conquistare nuovi clienti per le sorelle Fontana.
