NGV International

Ground Level, Grollo Equiset Garden

Oct 2018 – May 2019

In 2018, the NGV invited architects to participate in the fourth series of the NGV’s Architecture Commission Design Competition. Competitors are invited to activate the Grollo Equiset Garden at NGV International with an engaging temporary structure or installation. Previous iterations of the NGV’s Architecture Commission have included ephemeral structures by John Wardle Architects, M2 Studio and Retallack Thompson & Other Architects.

Entrants were asked to submit design proposals that can take many forms including a venue for hospitality, a performance space, a work of speculative architecture, a landscape intervention, a place design for playful interaction or an immersive space for reflection.

While titled an architecture commission, it is an important ambition of this annual site-specific commission that it offers the opportunity for architecture to be enacted in the broadest sense. To this end the Gallery specifically invites design proposals that promote collaboration and multidisciplinary thinking.

The winner of the 2018 competition will be announced in June. The winning architect’s entry will be commissioned by the NGV to complete the design development and delivery of the 2018 NGV Architecture Commission, with the structure revealed in December.

The 2018 NGV Architecture Commission is supported by RMIT University and The Hugh D.T. Williamson Foundation
