Angry Penguins and Realist Painting in Melbourne in the 1940s

NGV International

14 Sep – 11 Nov 89

This exhibition began with a suggestion from the British curators Richard Francis and Sandy Nairne that the Haywood Gallery should show Australian painting of the 1940s, particularly those associated with the Angry Penguins magazine. They put this proposal to the Haywood Gallery and to the Australian Bicentennial Authority. It was accepted with enthusiasm by both. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with the National Gallery of Australia and tours most of Australia’s public galleries. Featured artists include Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester, Arthur Boyd, Danila Vassilieff, Noel Counihan, Albert Tucker and Yosl Bergner.
