Fashion artists Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are the creative designers of luxury fashion house Viktor & Rolf. From their base in Amsterdam, the designers create spectacular fashion collections that reveal their interests in fantasy and storytelling.
As part of the Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists exhibition, NGV Kids presents Atelier: Viktor&Rolf for Kids, an interactive space designed especially for children and families. Here the fashion designers share their experimental approach to fashion and design through displays, multimedia experiences and hands-on activities.
Central to Atelier is the stunning wedding dress Viktor & Rolf created for the royal wedding of HRH Princess Mabel and Prince Friso van Oranje-Nassau in 2004. Inspired by this magnificent bridal gown and the fashion artists’ preference for white, children are invited to construct a fashion accessory using different folding and layering techniques. Afterwards, kids can strike a pose in a diorama setting and have their fashion moment captured in a portrait that can be shared with friends and family.
Atelier: Viktor&Rolf for Kids gives children insight into the creative phases of the fashion industry, beginning with making in the studio and finishing with the presentation of a collection in a runway show.

Preparation space
Princess Mabel’s wedding dress – its train decorated with more than 200 bows, each one symbolising enduring love – will inspire young visitors when they begin the ‘preparation’ activity. With a range of paper products, including white crepe paper and strands of raffia, children can make spectacular paper versions of ruffs or collars adorned with their own designs to wear and keep.
Presentation dioramas
Viktor & Rolf compare presenting a runway show to the staging of a theatre production. They create amazing and immersive runway experiences starring a cast of models and featuring live music and theatrical lighting. In the Atelier, Viktor & Rolf have created three magically themed dioramas inspired by their love of fairytales and dreams. Just like in a runway show or fashion photography shoot, in these dioramas everyone can make their own fashion statement.
A Drawing Book for Kids
To coincide with the exhibition Atelier: Viktor&Rolf for Kids, NGV Kids has published a drawing book for young budding designers. In this richly illustrated publication, guided by Viktor & Rolf's pet dachshund, Little Swan, children learn about the designers' creative vision and spectacular fashion collections. Young readers will have fun filling this book with their own creative fashion designs!
