Belvedere Op Art Exhibition

NGV International

26 Nov 68 – 5 Jan 69

This exhibition brings together 45 graphic works by artists including Bridget Riley, Josef Albers, Mon Levison, Elsworth Kelly, Diter Rot and Victor Vasarely, representing the Op-Art Movement. Eric Westbrook, Director, National Gallery of Victoria, notes in the exhibition catalogue: ‘In the last few years, a group of important artists in various countries have become particularly involved in an investigation of the direct impact on the eye and through the eye on the mind and physical responses of the spectator, of variously related forms and tones… For convenience, works of this kind have been referred to as “Op” presumably as an extension of and in contrast to a previous movement which has been given the label “Pop”.
