In 1996 the Victorian Government established the Contempora5 program with the aim of fostering and promoting contemporary art practice in Australia. The Contempora5 exhibitions were developed from an invitational prize in which five participating artists were selected and a winner nominated. The winner of the second Contempora5 award in 1999 was Ricky Swallow.
