Ground Level
The decision to feature the Gallery’s collection in a survey of twenty-six years of Australian art as the opening exhibition of the Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Court of Contemporary Art, rather than an exhibition defining a particular style or period, was consciously made by the Director to emphasize the importance of one collection as an integral part of the dynamics of the National Gallery of Victoria.
The recent refurbishing of the Australian Galleries for the display of the permanent collection and this exhibition, ‘Australian Art 1960-1986: Field to Figuration’, emphasize the Gallery’s desire to make available to a wider general public the treasures of the State collection.
