Ground Level

13 Dec 89 – 29 Jan 90

The exhibition series Graphics of the 50s, 60s and 70s forms part of an exhibition programme presenting examples of 20th century German art in the context of art history.

When we recall the artistic impressions of these three decades, it becomes clear that each decade is marked by a significant stylistic character and artistic personalities.

In planning the exhibition series and selecting the respective exhibits, Thomas Grochowiak (50s), Dieter Honisch (60s) and Götz Adriani (70s) were fully aware of the difficulties they faced in the choice of artists, procurement of reproductions and in matters concerning the budget. Any attempt at subdividing 30 years artistic development is bound to raise questions of appraisal, interpretation and classification. Even where there is fundamental agreement, there are still various ways in which the individual artists may be allocated.

Featured artists: Georg Baselitz, Bernhard and Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Hanne Darboven, Gottard Graubner, Imi Knowbel, Blinky Palermo, A.R Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Klaus Rinke, Dieter Roth, Ulrich Ruckriem, Walter Stohrer, Franz Erhard Wather
