Sir Sidney and Lady Nolan’s gift in 1983 of the Wimmera series of paintings is one of the most significant which the Gallery has ever received. Sir Sidney Nolan’s Wimmera paintings of 1942–44 represent a turning point in the depiction of Australian landscape. Through his time in the Wimmera and through these paintings, Nolan gave us a fresh look at our landscape. It is as significant in its vision as that of the late 19th century artists at Heidelberg – Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder.
