The National Gallery of Victoria welcomes the opportunity of this exhibition to re-affirm its interest and concern with contemporary art and with the living artist. As a public gallery it has a responsibility to exhibit the latest developments in the visual arts so that people unfamiliar with the idiom of recent art can begin to come to terms with it. Once crucial function of a public gallery is to provide a bridge between the living artist and the community which is frequently baffled by the experimental edge of art. Discovering contemporary art can be a challenge. It required an open mind as well as a critical one. I invite the gallery goers to this exhibition, to share the excitement and the challenge contemporary art offers.
