Ground Level
The Sculpture of Thailand is dominated by images of the Buddha. Gold, bronze, wood, stone and terracotta have been used, in various times, to mould the image of a Being whose message is one of moderation in all things, infinite mercy and universal love.
This exhibition has been drawn from museums and private lenders in Thailand. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit are patrons to the exhibition which has been funded by the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council.
Many of the objects are large – some of the stucco reliefs are 120cm square – but one of the highlights is an exquisitely shaped Buddha sculpted in gold which stands 19cm high. 75 sculptures are in the exhibition including friezes, stucco reliefs, figurines, pedestals and plaques. The serenity, grace and regal quality of many of the images provide a moving and impressive introduction to the great heritage of Thai sculpture.
