Tamarind

Homage to Lithography

NGV International

Ground Level

19 Jun – 20 Jul 75

An exhibition circulated under the auspices of The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

During the summer of 1969 a selection of lithographs from the more than 2500 produced at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles was on view at The Museum of Modern Art. One of the most important creative forces in the print field, the Tamarind Lithography Workshop almost singlehandedly has revived the complex medium of lithography. It has provided not only the materials but also the environment that fosters the delicate collaboration between artist and printer. Out of this collaboration came the extraordinary variety of images included in the exhibition. Since the Workshop was begun in 1960 by June Wayne with funds from the Ford Foundation’s Program in Humanities and the Arts, it has through its fellowship program been host to numerous artists – the famous, as well as the younger, less well-established. It has at the same time been the training ground for numerous artisan printers, many of whom have gone on to open new lithography workshops.
