Ground Level
Dong Qichang was a brilliant scholar and a prominrnt scholar-official of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). In his lifetime he produced paintings, calligraphy and writings on art of such originality that they revolutionised Chinese art and helped set a new course of artistic endeavour for the next three centuries. With Dong as the central figure, the Gallery has been building a coherent group of Chinese paintings and calligraphy of the Ming and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, representing artists who illustrate Dong’s theory and those he knew and influenced.
