The Perceptive Eye was the first photography exhibition curated by the NGV, two years after the Photography Department was founded. The exhibition was an Australian adaptation of the 1968 touring exhibition The Photographer’s Eye, curated by the Museum of Modern Art’s John Szarkowski. The exhibition is seen as a turning point in the acceptance of photography as an established medium in Australian public galleries. The exhibited artists were David Beal, Helmut Gritscher, David Moore, Lance Nelson and Richard Woldendorp.
