The Portrait of Mexico presents a comprehensive survey of Mexican art spanning more than 3,500 years, from pre-Columbian archaeology to contemporary painting and sculpture. Comprising 190 works drawn from the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City, the exhibition is curated by Fernando Gamboa, General Director of the Exhibition. It traces the development of major civilisations including the Olmec, Maya and Aztec, through the colonial period to the artistic renewal following the Mexican Revolution of 1910. The exhibition is supported by the Government of Mexico and a grant from the Commonwealth Government.
Exhibition previously shown in Belgium, France, Norway, Israel, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, India, Egypt, Latvia, Turkey, Poland and Austria.
