The Slowness of Speed

This exhibition provided audiences with an insight into the aesthetics and the social and industrial change that shape contemporary Korean art and culture.

It represented the work of seven important contemporary Korean artists; namely Bae Bien-U, Choi Jeong-Hwa, Kim Soo-Ja, Kim Young-Jin, Lee Bul, Park Hong-Chun and Yook Keun-Byung. Each of these artists combined references to the traditional and the contemporary in their work in order to emphasise some unsettling discontinuities between tradition and modernity. In doing so, they critically examined ideas of national and cultural identity.

The Slowness of Speed: Contemporary Korean Art was the second part of an exhibition exchange program between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Artsonje Center and Museum in Seoul and Kyongju, Korea. This partnership was organised by The Asialink Centre, Melbourne, through their Visual Arts program.
