NGV International

Ground Level

8 Feb 84 – 17 Feb 19

The NGV Waterwall is one of NGV International’s most recognisable architectural features. Designed by Sir Roy Grounds, the new dedicated NGV building on St Kilda Road opened in August 1968 to house the Collection, which was previously located in the State Library of Victoria on Swanston Street. Grounds’s design for the building included the now iconic Waterwall entrance, which runs on its own constant cycle. The never-ending flow creates a natural filter between the bustle of the city and the calm seclusion and ambience of the Gallery.

From its opening, the Waterwall has been used as a foundation for many artworks and installations, helping the NGV to showcase public art in a wide range of media. Explore some of the NGV Waterwall based artworks and installations below. As an ongoing project within the NGV Archive, this page will be continually updated.
