About this work
During Takekuma Bun-emon’s wrestling career, spanning October 1824 to March 1845, he reached the second-highest rank of Ozeki. He is noted in sumo archives as coming from a merchant family in the Lake Biwa area. His proportions – weight 135 kilograms and height 182 centimetres – made him a very large and imposing personality in Edo-period Japan.
