About this work

Alongside Thomas Hope, George Bullock was one of London’s finest furniture designers of the Regency period. This Pier commode is an outstanding example of Bullock’s massive Regency Neoclassical style. His furniture is known for its splendid brass inlay and ormolu mounts, alongside stylised marquetry using exotic timbers. Bullock also pioneered the use of Welsh Mona marble, seen in the variegated green slab. In1815 Bullock was commissioned by the British Government to supply furniture for Napoleon’s house of exile at Longwood on the island of St Helena, including a commode of comparable design to this one.
