About this work
Mischa Kogan put aside his early interest in medicine to study violin and viola at the Moscow Conservatorium. At the age of sixteen he studied in Vienna, then in Berlin before moving to Jerusalem. It was at this time that he created these evocative photographs: composed and framed like paintings, they make use of soft-focus and show the aesthetic characteristics of the international Pictorialist style. In 1928 Kogan migrated to Melbourne, and from 1938 to 1975 was a prominent member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
