About this work

Callot Soeurs was a Parisian couture house run by three sisters: Marie Callot Gerber, who led the design; Marthe Callot, later Madame Bertrand; and Regine Callot, later Madame Chantrell. Established in 1895, the house quickly became known for its quality fabrics, artisanal craftsmanship and Classical – and Orientalist-inspired silhouettes, motifs and palettes. Although Art Deco fashion was typified by geometric lines and stylised motifs, the scrolling motifs in this work serve as a reminder of the strong hold of classicism during the Art Deco period.
