About this work

Wukun Wanambi is a Yolŋu artist from Eastern Arnhem Land and a member of the Marrakulu clan. Wanambi is the oldest son of Mithili Wanambi, a clan leader and renowned painter who passed away in 1981. Wanambi began painting in 1997 and learned the sacred designs of his father from Yolŋu Elders. Early works such as this illustrate his keen eye for detail, form and line. Later in his life, Wanambi translated these designs onto discarded and recycled metals, catalysing a new school of etching in Yirrkala.
