About this work
Joe Tilson was associated with the development of Pop Art in Britain in the 1960s, and took up printmaking as a major artform in 1963. He shared the general optimism about technology prevalent in this decade, using photographic imagery and hi-tech materials in his prints. His imagery was often drawn from mass media and consumer advertising, and he presented the prints in the Made in Italy – Five Senses portfolio as enlarged 35mm slides printed on acetate. In these he conveys each of the five senses through an emblematically paired object and written word.
