About this work
In the nineteenth century, the urban British middle class craved photographs of castles, ivy-covered abbeys and stately homes – nostalgic images that existed in stark contrast to the rapid industrialisation occurring. Ruins were a popular photographic subject, embodying the passing of time and a return to nature.
