About this work
Francis Bedford travelled extensively throughout Wales, England and Scotland, amassing hundreds of photographs of picturesque views of the countryside. Images such as this view of Whitby Abbey, a seventh-century Christian monastery overlooking the North Sea, were popular in the mid to late nineteenth century – rugged yet idyllic scenes that exude a brooding melancholy and mystery.
