About this work

Here Yamamoto cites the conventions of Western tailoring by incorporating basting stitches into the finished design. Basting is a technique used by the tailor to mark the grain of the fabric in order to perfect the silhouette and fit of a garment. These basting marks are indicated in the white and red long stitch lines that indicate the position of the bust line, hip line and darts. By incorporating the marks of the incomplete garment into his finished design, Yamamoto shifts attention to these markings to celebrate the process of making and the beauty of the incomplete object.
