About this work
Josef Hoffmann designed numerous cutlery services between 1903 and 1930, and his 1906 Round Model featured in the Weiner Werkstätte’s Cabaret Fledermaus. The design prompted mixed reactions from the press, with some praising its rational simplicity of form, and others complaining of a ‘clinical’ character which made the cutlery fell like ‘surgical instruments’. The design was one of Hoffmann’s most successful; the original Round Model was produced by Wiener Werkstätte until 1916, but Hoffmann revisited the basic form in his last cutlery set produced by the Wiener Werkstätte, the SB5 model. The Round Model is still in production today by Alessi.
