About this work
David Thomas engages closely with both the history of monochrome painting and new iterations of this tradition. He explores the conditional parameters of painting and the perception of space and time. In this work, the white ground exposed in two opposite corners of the canvas give the appearance of two large brushstrokes interrupting the painting’s surface. Thomas places colour in relation to this white ground to create a space of emptiness, or a pause where he hopes viewers will stop to reflect on their environments and emotional responses to the painting. He has said ‘In the act of painting you feel…thought, touch and emotion are connected.’
