About this work

Gerrit van Honthorst was born and initially trained in Utrecht, before travelling to Rome in 1616, where he was deeply influenced by the work of Caravaggio and the Carracci. After his return to Utrecht in 1620, he established a reputation as a master portraitist. This painting shows his great skill at rendering the different textures of skin, hair, lace, silk and metal. It is a highly sensitive and humanist depiction of a sitter.
