About this work
Martin Margiela established his Artisanal collection in 1988 as a response to the conformity of the haute-couture fashion system. Reconstructing new garments from existing garments or accessories, either used or new, Margiela gave new life to old and abandoned pieces. Margiela’s Artisanal collections redefine ‘luxury’ as the labour hours are invested in production rather than the literal value of materials. These pieces exemplify Maison Martin Margiela’s legacy of deconstruction, referencing fashion history and documenting the passage of time.
