About this work

The print on this dress resembles toile de Jouy, a printed fabric popular in late eighteenth-century France, typically depicting idyllic or pastoral scenes based on engravings. In keeping with this imagery, the dress appears light and pretty. However, Watanabe’s use of webbing to secure a parachute-style backpack and draw up the front introduces a distinctly contemporary relevance.
