About this work
Born in Warrnambool, Victoria, Tony Coleing studied at East Sydney Technical College from 1958 to 1959. Between 1960 and 1962 he travelled around Australia and New Zealand working as a labourer. In 1963 he moved to England, studying painting and sculpture while working in theatrical decoration and antiques until 1968. Coleing exhibited in the first Mildura Sculpture Triennial in 1961 and in The Field at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1968, where three of his sculptures – including Untitled, 1968 – were shown. This work features long, green, grass-like fronds arranged in a line; their biomorphic fronds fall naturally to either side, creating the impression of grass caught in a breeze.
