About this work

This stool by the Viennese architect and designer Adolf Loos was directly based upon Leonard Wyburd’s Thebes, stool of 1884. Loos’s interiors were deeply influenced by English Arts and Crafts principles of truth to materials and the importance of hand craftsmanship. As in his other furniture for the Langer apartment, on display in the adjacent gallery, Loos often incorporated historical furniture design and indeed promoted its use, believing that good design was good design, regardless of when it was created. Egyptian stool is typical of this approach.
