About this work
Modernist painter Constance Stokes was trained at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, and in 1929 won a scholarship to continue her study at London’s Royal Academy of Arts. The subject of this painting is unconfirmed; however, it is speculated that the work may depict the donor’s mother, Dorothy Ellen Niall. The textile used as a backdrop is by Michael O’Connell and is also visible in a still life by the artist, Marguerites and cornflowers,1930, which was exhibited in the Exhibition of Paintings by Constance Parkin in 1933.
