About this work
In July 2016 Maria Grazia Chiuri became the seventh designer and first female artistic director at Christian Dior. The daughter of a dressmaker, Chiuri studied fashion at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome. Prior to Dior, she held various design roles at Fendi and Valentino. The designer quickly garnered a reputation at Dior for feminine, forthright and romantic yet practical designs. This look features trompe l’oeil metallic sequinning transposing the naked female torso onto the exterior. This design alludes to surrealist dreaming, the unconscious and women’s bodies, with reference to the Argentine-Italian surrealist artist Leonor Fini, one of the avant-garde artists Christian Dior chose to exhibit in the gallery he ran before he became a couturier.
