About this work

Jutta Sika designed a number of distinctive decorative schemes to adorn innovative table ware forms created by her teacher Koloman Moser and executed under the auspices of Josef Böck’s firm. Sika’s bold and innovative decorations show the clear influence of Japanese graphic design, especially textile patterns. Japanese textile stencils – katagame – were employed by Moser and Josef Hoffmann to teach their students the principles of flat pattern design. Despite the firm’s title, Josef Böck did not manufacture ceramics but commissioned porcelain and stoneware vessels from a number of Bohemian and Austrian factories and then decorated these wares in its Vienna workshops.
