About this work

Watanabe’s mastering of pattern-cutting allows the designer to subvert the sartorial and archetypal design, derived from Savile Row tailoring to military uniforms, punk and Edwardian fashions. His 2002 spring–summer collection saw Watanabe interrogate workwear codes and the possibilities of denim. In this work he challenges the handle and drapability of denim by cutting the rigid fabric on the bias and experimenting with fraying as decoration.
