About this work

Wintjiya Napaltjarri was a Pintupi artist known for painting her father’s ancestral Country near Kintore, about 500 kilometres west of Mparntwe/Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The daughter of renowned painter Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi, she grew up travelling her Country in the Gibson Desert, immersed in cultural knowledge. As part of the second generation of painters at Papunya, Napaltjarri developed a graphic style that was often characterised by her stripped-back palette. Here we see her skillful application of white to trace seasonal and climactic changes across Country, offering a sense of intense, storming wind and hail.
