About this work

This work exemplifies John Galliano’s technical prowess and fondness for bias-cutting in a historic homage to Empress Josephine and Lolita. Merging literary inspiration with a historical figure resulted in a collection that featured dramatic and ornate designs alongside youthful and whimsical elements. The collection opened with dresses such as this, which Galliano likened to the cotton muslin gowns worn by Josephine in the early nineteenth century. He referred to these dresses as the ‘Josephine muslins’.
