About this work

Eugene Atget’s enduring subject was Paris. He slowly and systematically recorded all aspects of city life and architecture at a time of great transition for the French capital, as it was experiencing rapid modernisation under the direction of Baron Haussmann. Working alone with a box camera on a tripod and glass-plate negatives, Atget traipsed through the city streets recording often overlooked details such as doorknobs, staircases, shopfronts, street scenes, houses, parks and Parisians themselves. His serious, straightforward documentary approach allowed him to amass an extraordinary and poetic photographic archive of the city.
