About this work

This teapot was part of a tea service that Otto Lindig designed prototypes for during his time at the Dornburg pottery workshop. In 1929 the Staatliche Majolika Manufaktur began serial production of the service as a result of the Bauhaus exhibition Die Gebrauchswohnung, the ‘functional dwelling’ that was held in the Dammerstock housing estate in Karlsruhe in 1928. Lindig’s designs were put into production in Karlsruhe, as the Dornburg workshop was not able to keep up with the demand for such large quantities. His models are thought to have been made until 1962, and during the 1930s the tea service was made in a high-fired red earthenware body with a cream coloured whitish-grey glaze. This suggests that the teapot in the NGV Collection may date to the 1930s.
