About this work

Into the 1990s Yamamoto’s work drew on historical silhouettes while rejecting the binaries of men’s and women’s wear. Celebrated for his postmodern enmeshing of Eastern and Western aesthetics, Yamamoto’s most recognisable silhouettes during this period were inspired by Victorian bustles and Edwardian (1900–10) draped dresses. Bustle coat playfully imitates a Victorian ‘visite’ coat, subverting contemporary dress codes and exploring the coat as a garment typology.
